Microneedling near SpaldingSmoother-looking skin, one session at a time.

Very fine needles make tiny, controlled punctures, and your skin repairs them. Over the following months, uneven texture can look smoother and shallow, rolling acne scars can soften. For something quicker, the carbon laser facial and dermaplaning brighten skin the same day, with nothing to recover from.

Where to start

Start with what you'd like to change

  • Uneven texture or shallow acne scars

Microneedling. It works deeper and more slowly than the other two, and can soften shallow, rolling scars. Deep, narrow ice-pick scars respond poorly.

  • Congested skin and enlarged-looking pores

The carbon laser facial, sometimes called a carbon peel. It clears surface congestion and helps pores look smaller for a while. Repeat treatments hold the result better than one.

  • Dull skin or fine, pale facial hair

Dermaplaning. It lifts dead surface skin and fine hair, so skin looks brighter and make-up sits more evenly for three to four weeks.

Not yet, if

  • you have active, inflamed spots, because a needle or blade over them can spread infection
  • you have a cold sore, broken skin, or a flare of eczema, psoriasis or rosacea in the area
  • you're taking, or have recently finished, strong acne medication
  • you form raised or keloid scars, for microneedling
  • you're pregnant, for microneedling
  • you're under 18

None of the three is a treatment for acne or rosacea. If spots keep coming back, see your GP first, and come to us once your skin has settled.

Side by side

Three treatments, three different jobs

Microneedling works deeper and slowly. The carbon laser facial and dermaplaning work on the surface and show the same day.

Microneedling and dermaplaning can be done in the same appointment. Not sure which suits your skin? That's what the call and the free consultation are for.

Results

What to expect, and when

Microneedling changes slowly. Little shows after one session, and the fair time to judge it is about three months after your last. The carbon facial and dermaplaning show the same day and are temporary: about three to four weeks for dermaplaning, while the carbon facial holds better when it's repeated.

How it works

How a microneedling session goes

  1. We call you

A short, no-pressure call, within one working day, to answer your questions and work out which of the three fits what you'd like to change.

  2. Consultation

Free. We look at your skin, check nothing rules treatment out, and tell you honestly what it can do, including when something else would do more.

  3. Skin check and numbing

On the day we check nothing has changed, cleanse your skin, then apply a numbing cream and leave it to work.

  4. Treatment

The needles pass over each area, set deeper over scarring and shallower where the skin is thin. Pinpoint bleeding is normal where they go deeper.

  5. Before you leave

SPF 50 goes on and you take written aftercare home. The appointment takes 45 minutes in all.

  6. Your next session

Four to six weeks later, if you want one. Each session is booked on its own.

Afterwards: red and warm on day one, like moderate sunburn; pink, tight and a little dry on days two and three; back to normal for most people by days four to seven. For 24 hours, no make-up, sweaty exercise or swimming. For a week after microneedling or dermaplaning, wear SPF 50 every day.

Before you decide

The small print, in plain words

  • Microneedling is slow. One session does little on its own; judge it about three months after your last.
  • It can soften shallow scarring. It won't shift deep, narrow ice-pick scars, and no course makes scarring disappear.
  • The carbon facial and dermaplaning show the same day, and they're temporary. That's why people book them again.
  • None of the three is a treatment for acne or rosacea.

Would 100% recommend! Alicia took the time to talk to me about what I needed and was honest and kind, which is what you need when considering these kind of treatments. Alicia took the time to check in following treatments and put any worries I had to rest throughout the process.

Questions

Straight answers

Does microneedling hurt?

A numbing cream goes on first and is left to work before we start. You'll still feel it, more where the needles go deeper over scarring, and pinpoint bleeding is normal there. You can ask for a break at any point.

How long will my skin be red?

A day or two, like moderate sunburn, then a few days of tight, dry skin. Most people are back at work the next day and back to normal within a week. If you have an event coming up, leave at least a week after microneedling.

How many microneedling sessions will I need?

There's no fixed course. Change builds across several sessions rather than one, and scarring usually needs more than general texture. Sessions are £80 each, four to six weeks apart. You'll get an honest estimate at your consultation.

Can it help acne scars?

Shallow, rolling scars, the wide ones with a soft, sloping edge, respond best, and a course can soften them. Deep, narrow ice-pick scars respond poorly. No course makes scarring disappear, so we'll look at which kind you have before suggesting anything.

Can I have it if I still get spots?

Not while they're active. A needle or blade over active spots can spread infection and leave more marks, not fewer. Get them settled first, with your GP as the place to start, and come back when your skin has calmed down.

Will it make my pores smaller?

No treatment changes pore size for good. Microneedling and the carbon facial can both make enlarged pores look smaller. The carbon facial's effect is temporary and holds better with repeat treatments.

Is microneedling suitable for darker skin?

Darker skin can be needled. No heat is involved, so the risk of colour change is lower than with laser, but there's still a risk of temporary darkening afterwards. We'll look at your skin and talk it through before you start.

Which should I have before an event?

Dermaplaning or the carbon laser facial, because both show the same day. Leave make-up until the day after dermaplaning. If you'd rather have microneedling, have your last session at least a week before.

Will my facial hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

No. The blade cuts the hair at the surface and doesn't touch the root, so it grows back as it was: the same thickness, the same colour, at the same rate. Any stubbly feel is the blunt cut end, and it goes as the hair grows out.

Isn't dermaplaning just shaving?

It takes off more than hair. A sterile surgical blade, held at a shallow angle by a trained practitioner, lifts the outer layer of dead skin along with the fine hair. Losing that dead layer is what makes skin look brighter and helps make-up sit evenly.

Is a home roller the same thing?

No. Home rollers are made not to break the skin, so they do much less. In clinic, the needles go deeper, under numbing cream, set for each area of your face.

Who will treat me?

Alicia, or Libby from her team. Whoever treats you is fully trained in that treatment.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. All three treatments are for adults aged 18 and over.
